Newcastle United report 'appalling' racist abuse aimed at Joe Willock to police after 2-1 loss to Fulham

Newcastle United have reported "appalling" racist abuse aimed at midfielder Joe Willock to police, after the side's 2-1 loss on Saturday.

Willock shared the messages and comments he received in the wake of the Magpies slumping to a Premier League defeat at home to Fulham.

A club statement, released on Sunday morning, said: "Newcastle United strongly condemns the appalling racist abuse received by Joe Willock on Instagram on Saturday evening.

"There is no room for racism anywhere.

"The club has reported the abuse to Meta - the owners of Instagram, and urges all social media companies to do more to eradicate this behaviour from their platforms.

"The club has also reported the abuse to the police, and will support the strongest possible action against those responsible."

Willock is the latest in a long line of black footballers to face such vitriol.

Northumbria Police said it had received "a number of complaints about a post on social media" and was investigating.

"We want to make it clear we condemn all forms of discrimination," a police spokesperson added.

Willock's teammate Alexander Isak posted on X on Sunday morning, saying: "We win together, we lose together! Always with you brother Joe Willock. There's no room for racism."

The Premier League said it was "appalled" by the abuse and was working with the club and authorities.

It added it would take any possible action against anyone it could identify.

Meta has been approached for comment.
