Known for his punk-inspired image and energetic performances dating back to the 1980s, Billy Idol has captured the hearts of fans around the world with his distinctive voice, signature sneer and rebellious attitude. While many are familiar with his hits like "White Wedding" and "Rebel Yell," there are several intriguing and lesser-known aspects of Billy Idol's life and career. Here’s some facts you might not know about the enigmatic rock star who grew up in Worthing:

 

 

1. Born as William Michael Albert Broad: Before adopting the stage name "Billy Idol," the English singer was born William Michael Albert Broad on November 30, 1955, in Stanmore, Middlesex. His family then moved to Sussex, where he spent time growing up in Goring-by-Sea and attending school in Worthing. His stage name was reportedly inspired by a teacher's description of him as "idle" due to his rebellious nature.

 

2. A Brighton connection: It’s not just Worthing where Idol is known in in Sussex - did you know that the rock star has a strong connection to Brighton? Having spent considerable time in this artistic haven, drawn to its creative energy and alternative scene, he recorded his 1983 hit album "Rebel Yell" at Brighton's Townhouse Studios, immersing himself in the city's unique cultural vibe.

 

3. The Early Days with Generation X: Before his solo success, Billy Idol was a member of the punk rock band Generation X. The band released three albums in the late 1970s – in fact, in 1977 the band played their very first gig outside of London at the Sussex Arts Club in Brighton. Although the band achieved moderate success, Idol eventually decided to pursue his better-known solo career, which would skyrocket him to international fame. 
 

 

 

4. Motorcycle Accident and Recovery: In 1990, Idol was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Los Angeles. The crash left him with a broken leg and arm, which required extensive surgery and rehabilitation. The star’s recovery was a challenging time for him, but he eventually made a triumphant return to the music scene.

 

5. Acting Stints: In addition to his musical career, Billy Idol has also made appearances in several films and television shows. Some of his notable acting roles include appearances in movies like "The Wedding Singer" and "The Doors," as well as TV shows such as "Californication" and "Sons of Anarchy."
