A surge of vehicles trying to get into Littlehampton's household tip is being blamed for its sudden closure this afternoon.
West Sussex County Council said the recycling site, at Mill Lane in Wick, was shutting temporarily today (February 25) for "health and safety" reasons.
The authority asked people in the town to store waste at home if it didn't risk anyone's health — and only go out-doors for essential purposes or exercise.
Officials added that kerbside collections for recycling and waste in Littlehampton are largely unaffected, and pleaded with residents to continue to make use of them where possible.
