The Midhurst Town Team will give out 2,500 Midhurst Pounds this Saturday, to support local businesses in the aftermath of the Angel Hotel Fire.
From 10am to 3pm, Midhurst Town Team will be literally handing out envelopes of ‘cash’ outside Stockley Trading near the North Street Car Park.
The cash in question is the Midhurst Pound – a brand new currency created by the Town Team to support the town's independent businesses.
Over 400 envelopes are up for grabs on a first-come-first-served basis, containing £5 or £50 – and one 'golden' envelope containing a whopping £250. Midhurst Pounds work just the same as regular pounds, except they must be spent at one of Midhurst's independent small businesses.
Participating stores include hair and beauty salons, Midhurst's famous West Street boutiques and many of the town's excellent cafés, pubs and restaurants – so there's no shortage of choice.
The Midhurst Pound is being launched to give the local economy a much-needed boost. Already reeling from Covid and the on-going cost of living crisis, small businesses have suffered another shock in the aftermath of the tragic Angel Hotel fire in March.
Since the fire North Street has been closed to traffic, effectively cutting the town in half. No one knows how long the road will be closed, and until it reopens much of the traffic that sustains the local economy will simply disappear.
"Midhurst has so many great shops, cafés and thriving independent businesses," said Karin Dunbar of the Town Team. "It's a wonderful destination in its own right – and ironically the temporary pedestrianisation of the high street makes it even better. But the reality is that many businesses rely on trade from through traffic to survive. The Midhurst Pound is a way for people to support the local businesses that make our town special and get some help with their own cost of living at the same time. It's a win-win!"
To claim your Midhurst Pound windfall, simply come and find the Town Team stall outside Stockley Trading, near Fitzcanes Café on North Street. A total of 406 envelopes will be handed out, with a limit of one envelope per household. And when they're gone, they're gone.
