£3.3 Million Invested To Improve Access To Primary Care In Sussex This Winter

People in Sussex are set to benefit from £3.3 million of funding from the NHS to improve access to primary care services this winter, including more easy-to-book appointments.

The local NHS is working with GP practices across Sussex this winter to improve access for patients across local communities.

Health and care services, including GP practices, are seeing significant increases in need for care since the pandemic, and NHS services in Sussex are planning to ensure they can provide the best possible service for patients this winter.

That’s why the NHS in Sussex is investing £1.8m to support practices to further improve access will encourage innovation to support practices to remain accessible and responsive to patients.

This will help GP practices to work together to make more appointments available between 6.30pm and 8pm Mondays to Fridays and between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays, helping those who find it difficult to access appointments during usual weekday working hours.

A further £1.5 million of funding is also being invested supporting communities with high levels of deprivation.

This will be allocated to practices in areas with the highest number of patients living in deprivation to provide more accessible and responsive primary care services.

Amy Galea, NHS Sussex Chief Primary Care Officer, said:

“Over the Winter months is Sussex we are investing £3.3 million to increase the number of appointments being delivered across General Practices.

"(Additionally we hope) to improve the infrastructure the operate in, including improved telephone systems and practice websites.”

NHS Sussex is committed to improving access to primary care services for local people and is investing millions of pounds to help ensure better health and care for all in the region.

More than 41,000 appointments were held each working day in Sussex in September — a record number this year.
