A grant of more than £45,000 from the group overseeing science in the police has come to the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner's office to develop safety technology for vulnerable people.

Katy Bourne, who supervises the role of police in Sussex, intends the funding to be used to develop a mobile phone app to improve safety for people who find themselves in vulnerable situations — especially women and girls.

Designed to help them find safe spaces quickly when they are in danger, the free app will also reportedly allow users to send their GPS location to a nominated contact and make reports directly to Sussex Police.

Funding for the app has been awarded by the Police Science, Tech and Research Board which provides investment for future police programmes.

It was one of only 29 grants awarded out of 123 applications.

According to Sussex Police, the board members were particularly keen to receive bids that support police efforts to better understand and tackle violence, abuse and intimidation against women and girls.

PCC Katy Bourne said:

“I’m delighted that my team has been successful in securing this funding to help everyone, especially women and girls, to access safe spaces in Sussex.

“The new app that is being developed will provide reassurance and support, helping those who feel they are danger to quickly and easily share their location with a trusted contact, as well as giving them the means to capture evidence and make a non-emergency report to Sussex Police.”
