Brighton & Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray has exchanged verbal blows with controversial Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton on Twitter. Club legend Murray - the Albion's all-time leading scorer - got into the row after expressing strong views about restarting the Premier League season. Barton hit out at Murray and Watford striker Troy Deeney, who have both raised health and safety concerns over the season resuming. "Glenn Murray and Troy Deeney are in a relegation scrap," tweeted Barton. "If they don’t want to play, I understand it. Don’t play then. Stay at home. There will be a lot of young players at Brighton/Watford, desperate for an opportunity and who will fight to save their respective clubs." Murray responded. "Never once have I said the season should be voided." Barton is keen for the season to resume with his Fleetwood side currently fifth in League One and in with a chance of gaining promotion to the Championship if and when the action resumes. Earlier this week, Murray said, "The league does need to go on, but if we give ourselves a little bit more time, the country will be back up and running again, we'll have learned more about this virus, we won't necessarily have a vaccine, but we'll be better prepared to deal with it if anyone does get it. I can't understand after loosening the lockdown why we're in such a rush to get it back when we could just wait a month and see if things go to plan. Why not see how the country copes with lessening the lockdown without starting unnecessary sports when people are dying all around us, and the death rate is still high." When football was suspended two months ago, the Albion were 15th in the Premier League table, three places above the relegation zone.
