Hundreds lined the city streets of Brighton last night (December 21) as the annual Burning the Clocks celebration took place for the winter solstice.
The community event, held by Same Sky, celebrates the shortest day of the year with locals making lanterns from kits provided by the community arts charity, then passing them onto a blazing bonfire on Brighton Beach as a 'token of the year's end'.
This year’s theme was Clocks, which was reflected in the lanterns made by the community for the parade.
Same Sky says this theme was 'inspired by our changing perception of time’s passage after the event’s successful return last winter'.
Artistic Director John Varah said:
“Burning the Clocks is having its great reset, passing the time with ticking distractions, delightful nonsense, and a thousand illuminations; to render a few dark, silent hours even stiller.”
