Appeal To Help Care For Unaccompanied Refugee Children In West Sussex

West Sussex County Council's fostering website

West Sussex County Council is helping Kent find care, including foster homes, for unaccompanied refugee children.

The local authority, which contains the Port of Dover, stated last week it was finding difficulty in locating suitable care for the numbers of children who had arrived without families.

According to West Sussex County Council's leader Paul Marshall, ten children have been found care in this county over the past fortnight.

Cllr Marshall said:

"The increasing number of children seeking asylum who are arriving in Kent does indeed mean that West Sussex is being asked to care for more children.

"West Sussex and other local authorities around the country are actively responding to this urgent request.

"This is part of our ongoing commitment to provide all our vulnerable children with a safe place to live and thrive.

"At this time, we care for 86 children seeking asylum, both in the county and further afield."

A spokesperson for County Hall added an appeal for new foster carers:

"Children seeking asylum are often placed in foster care, where they are given the love and support that they need to overcome the trauma many have suffered.

"We continue to urgently seek more people who have a spare room and would consider fostering.

"People can find out more by searching https://westsussex.gov.uk/fostering online or calling 033 022 27775."
