What's believed to be the UK's first road-registered solar car is returning today, August 10, from its light-powered tour of the British mainland.

This vehicle (see above) has been built by pupils from Ardingly and Ifield Community College.

But it's not the first long journey for the Basking Beastie.

Already in October 2019, she's travelled nearly 1,900m across Australia in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide.

Today at 5pm, she's expected to be driven through the high street of Ardingly and then down College Road into Ardingly College to be greeted by a small group of people

The 10 day GB "solar tour" was intended to raise awareness of sustainable transport before the Glasgow Climate Conference in November.

The tour involved visits to Inverness, a drive through the high street of Saint Andrews, and visits to the Glasgow conference centre where COP26 will happen.

In England the car visited Leicester Space Centre, where the students spoke about its construction, and paid a visit to home, funded by the motor trade charity Ben, for members of the motor industry.

The car also attended the British Museum electric vehicle rally in Warwick.

Students said the highlight of the journey was when the solar car drove down the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

According to the team of builders, this picture is a "symbolic message, saying that pupils can make a positive difference to our world".

The team said it was also very proud to be awarded "Institute of the Motor Industry" centre status — understoood to be a first for a solar car team.
