Around £20,000 worth of equipment has reportedly been stolen from a compound belonging to the 3rd/5th Lancing Sea Scout Group over the weekend.

Scout Leader Shaun Oliver said he was first alerted that their kayak lock-up had been damaged by a Facebook message on Monday (31) morning.

The individual reportedly said kayaks were left laying on the river bank and out in the surrounding area.

The leaders of the group went to the building to inspect and could see signs of a break-in.

Shaun said a variety of around ten kayaks, paddles, spraydecks, cags, safety lines and buoyancy aids were missing.

All of which were bought through donations, fundraising and grants.

The incident has been repored to police.

Shaun added:

"So this week we were supposed to be putting on sessions with the scouts and cubs, and now we will have to postpone as we just don't have the equipment.

"This weekend we were going to have the cubs on the water for the first time this year.

"With the equipment being stolen, we've had to stop all activities.

"The thieves have stolen from the kids, they're going to be more upset than what the adults will be"

A GoFundMe page has been set up to recover some of the costs and get the kids back on the water as soon as possible.

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said:

"The theft is believed to have happened between 8.30pm on Friday (28 August) and Monday morning (31 August).

"Between 15-20 kayaks plus kayak equipment have been reported stolen.

"Anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious is asked to report online or call 101, quoting 295 of 31/08."
