Police have detained a man in Worthing in connection with a reported attack on a woman in a flat in South Street in the Tarring area of the town.

Officers said they received a report of an assault on a woman at a flat at about 10.02pm last night, April 29.

On arriving at the scene, police found the suspect had barricaded himself inside the property.

Specialist negotiators engaged with the man, who later climbed onto the roof.

Several tiles and, reportedly, bricks from a chimney were thrown to the ground, causing damage, but no injuries were reported.

Soon after, officers secured entry to the flat and negotiations continued for several hours.

Shortly after 3am this morning, Friday April 30, the suspect climbed down from the roof of his own accord and was detained 'safely', according to police.

A 34-year-old man from Worthing was arrested on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm, causing criminal damage and making threats to kill. He remains in police custody.

The victim — a 26-year-old woman from Worthing — sustained facial injuries which did not require hospital treatment.

Officers said she made her way to a place of safety and is assisting police with enquiries.

A section of South Street was temporarily closed to allow for debris to be cleared, and the scene was earlier today secured for forensic enquiries to be carried out.
