A young badger has been rescued from the basement of a flat in Hastings. Officers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) were called at 11am yesterday (Monday, 9) to Magdalen Road in Hastings, following reports a badger had fallen down into the basement of a flat and was unable to climb out. [caption id="attachment_13280102" align="alignnone" width="1000"] The badger was discovered at a property in Hastings.[/caption] Armed with a large blanket, dog grasper and badger cage, an officer climbed down into the basement where he covered the cage with a blanket to simulate a cave. The badger then obliged, shuffling into the cage. [caption id="attachment_13280101" align="alignnone" width="1000"] The officer coaxed the animal into a badger cage.[/caption] The rescuer, Trevor Weeks MBE, said: "The badger was luckily nice and co-operative but clearly very wary of what I was doing. "I placed the cage in front of him and covered it with the blanket so it made a nice dark cave, hoping the badger would then want to run inside and hide. "With a bit of encouragement the badger did exactly that, making my life so much easier." Officials said, as badgers are territorial, they have to be released very close to where they were found to avoid any territorial conflicts. Lead casualty manager, Katie Nunn Nash, said: "He was bedded down for the day at WRAS's Casualty Centre at Whitesmith where he tucked into jam and peanut butter sandwiches as well as dog food and biscuits. "We decided to release the badger a few metres away in a side street, so returned him at around midnight as the roads were nice and quiet. "Once he realised the door was open and knew where he was he shot off along the road".
