Beachgoers warned to 'take care' with reduced lifeguard service in Sussex

The RNLI is warning people heading to the regions beaches to take extra care following the updated Government guidance. It comes as the guidance for England has changed to allow people to travel to the coast and use the water. Many people are expected to participate in water-based activities such as swimming, kayaking and surfing. The charity, which ordinarily has lifeguard patrols stationed across the South East, paused its service due to restrictions - although lifeboat stations in Sussex remain fully operational. Currently working with beach owners and local authorities, it says it hopes to provide a lifeguard service on around 30% of the 240 beaches it normally covers across the country. The RNLI says it urges anyone planning to visit the coast to follow safety advice: Take care near cliffs - know your route and your limitations Have a plan - check the weather forecast and tide times If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and Float If boating, ensure your equipment is functioning and maintained In any coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
