Brighton & Hove Celebrates Refugee Week

A week of events is taking place in the city to mark this year’s Refugee Week, running from June 19 - 25.

Refugee Week is a worldwide celebration of the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

This year marks the event’s 25th anniversary with the theme of ‘compassion’.

A spokesperson for the council said:

The theme explores the interconnectedness of people across the world - that nothing happens in isolation and something seemingly ‘far away’ can have an impact on us here.

In a world of ongoing conflicts and crises, it’s more important than ever for us to have compassion not only for our nearest and dearest, or those who we share similarities with, but also those who we perceive as different. We are all similarly different, we all feel pain, fear and suffering, love and hope.

Through art and cultural activities Refugee Week 2023 hopes to promote a shared understanding of compassion.

Councillor Leslie Pumm, chair of the Equalities, Community Safety & Human Rights Committee said:

“There’s never been a greater need to stand up for the rights of people seeking protection and celebrate all that Refugee Week stands for.

“Brighton & Hove is a City of Sanctuary, and we are proud of how our city continues to come together to provide welcome and support to people looking for sanctuary, most recently those fleeing persecution and war in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Sudan.

“Even a simple act of kindness can do wonders for someone’s sense of belonging and mental wellbeing.

“We are a city of inclusion, proud of our diversity and united in our compassion for others.”

Brighton & Hove Libraries are 'proud to be a diverse community space where everyone can feel welcome and included and connect with others'.

The ‘Library of Sanctuary’, Jubilee Library, and other libraries in the city have again created a thoughtfully curated programme of events and activities suitable for families and individuals of all ages.

If you’d like to immerse yourself in the topic of refugees and migration, you can find collections of thematic books highlighted in libraries and online display.

This year Brighton & Hove's libraries invite you to join them in showing solidarity by taking part in Simple Acts at Jubilee Library, with events starting on Sunday 18 June.

All events are free to attend. No need to book, just drop in.
