Brighton & Hove Sports Festival Returns This Month

TAKEPART Festival of Sport and Activity is back in just over two weeks (June 17-25) with a full programme of activities available to book now.

Running from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 June, the festival is a chance for everyone to try out free sport, dance, exercise and physical activity sessions.

From Hollingbury to Hove, and Preston Park to Whitehawk, more than 60 local groups are providing taster sessions for people of all ages and abilities over the week.

Activities include: tennis, rugby, gymnastics, martial arts, skateboarding, American football, Pétanque, dance, football, cycling, walking and table tennis.

If you’re not sure what you’d like to try, you can attend the launch event on Saturday, June 17 at the Level where they’ll be workshops and performances as well as opportunities to speak to coaches and fitness experts.

You can also get friendly advice on being active, as well as information about healthy eating, stopping smoking and active travel.

Whether you’re looking for an activity to keep the kids busy and active, interested in improving your health, or looking to spend time with friends and family, there’s something for everyone.

Councillor Bruno De Oliveira, chair of the Health & Wellbeing board:

“Moving, even just a little bit more, not only improves our physical health, but can also improve our mental wellbeing.

“Regular physical activity can reduce our risk of some chronic conditions including dementia, depression, heart disease and some cancers. It can also help reduce stress, improve sleep, boost self-esteem and provides a great opportunity to be social.

“That’s why it’s so important for all our residents to be able to easily access sports and activities they enjoy.

“There’s a huge selection of things on offer in our city throughout the year, including free activities run by our Healthy Lifestyles team.

“TAKEPART is a perfect opportunity to find out what’s on offer, try something new, or take a step towards improving your health.

“It’s vital that we support the community with social prescribing initiatives like TAKEPART, and it’s why it’s our vision to make sure health is considered in all our policies.”

The full programme of activities is now available to view online: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/takepart-festival-active-living-events.

All of the events and activities are free to join and some need to be booked in advance and are aimed at particular groups, ages or abilities.

All the activities at the launch event are drop in so you don’t need to plan ahead, and many are suitable for all ages and abilities.

You can also pick up a leaflet with more information and a map of the launch day event from community venues across the city.

You can also contact the Healthy Lifestyles Team to find activities or get support to help you be more active, maintain a healthy weight, eat better, stop smoking, reduce your alcohol intake or improve your wellbeing all year round.
