Brighton burglars sentenced after breaking into coffee shop

A man who smashed his way into a coffee shop in Brighton, causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage, has been jailed while his accomplice has been given a suspended sentence. Stephen Fidler, 43, of no fixed address, and Mark Kaid, 39, of Regency Square in the city, broke into The Trading Post Coffee Roasters in Kensington Gardens in the early hours last Thursday morning (October, 10) and took cash from the till drawer. Police said a charity collection pot containing more cash was also missing. At Brighton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (October, 16), Fidler was jailed for 26 weeks, while Kaid was sentenced to ten weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, after the pair both admitted to burglary. Police said both men were each ordered to pay over £500 in compensation, while Kaid must also comply with a drug rehabilitation programme. Inspector Karen Osborn, of the Brighton Prevention Team, said: "We are working hard with our partners and communities in Brighton and Hove to prevent and detect burglary, and deal positively with any offenders to ensure they do not continue to hurt our residents and businesses. "The swift conclusion of this case demonstrates our commitment to tackling this issue, to protect our communities and keep them from harm."
