Brighton Marathon will be part of a weekend celebration of running after postponements last year caused by the pandemic — but organisers want spectators to avoid normally-popular areas.

To help maintain social distancing for all on Sunday 12 September, residents and supporters are being asked to avoid these usually popular areas:

  • the Start in Preston Park
  • the Sealife Centre Aquarium roundabout
  • Madeira Drive at the Finish

Chiefs said it would be safer to celebrate the Marathon at other locations along the 26.2 mile route.

Organisers have also announced further anti-Covid measures, partly with the goal of assuring potential volunteers that their safety is a priority.

Tom Naylor, Event Director said:

“Despite the fact that many Covid-19 restrictions have now been lifted in the UK, the wellbeing of our participants, staff and local community is of the utmost importance and we have therefore made some significant changes to make this year’s event as safe and secure as possible.

"Since March last year we have been part of a working group called MSO, liaising with major government departments and race organisers, to find a way for mass participation running events to come back and operate safely.

"Many of the changes we are proposing at our event this year, have been a result of the collaboration of the MSO.

"We very much hope that the Brighton & Hove residents will help us to bring the Brighton Marathon Weekend to life.”

Aims include allowing social distancing, lower the number of touch points involving runners and the event team, spreading participants out, and reducing spectator congestion.

More than a race, "Brighton Marathon Weekend" will take place from 10-12 September 2021.

It includes the Brighton Marathon, the "BM10k" and "Mini Mile" Races.

According to organisers, the marathon is now the eighth largest in Europe and second largest in the UK.

They said it also one of the city’s most successful fund-raising events, benefitting "hundreds" of charities.

Organisers, Grounded Events Company, will continue to work and respond to any changes in national or local government guidance surrounding Covid-19.
