"Massive thanks to our friends, neighbours, and Brighton Fire Department for saving the pub!"
That's this morning's message from the owners of The Roundhill, a neighbourhood pub with a celebrated plant-based menu, on Brighton's Ditchling Road.
Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue indicated this morning a washing machine is believed to have been the cause of a fire that started around 1.45am in the building's basement.
Crews from Barcombe, Lewes, Roedean, Preston Circus and Hove attended to bring the flames under control.
They left at around 3.45am.
The team at the pub said a fire alarm system detected the problem, and they were able to call emergency services quickly.
They added that a few days need to be allowed to fix any damage and air out the whole building, so they would close for a time "until we are ready".
