Burning The Clocks Event Returns To Brighton

Some roads in Brighton will be closed on Wednesday (Dec 21) when community event Burning the Clocks returns to the city centre following a two-year break.

The event, which happens annually on the shortest day of the year (Dec 21) is created by Same Sky, the largest community-led arts charity in the South East.

Using kits supplied by Same Sky, local people assemble lanterns and parade through the city, before throwing them onto a bonfire on Brighton Beach, symbolising the year-end.

With stunning lanterns accompanied by the beats of local drummers Barulho, the lively event is also billed as a time for reflection of the past year and where we will be going in 2023.

This year, the parade will begin around the pavilion area at around 6.30pm and finish at the beach near Madeira Drive at around 7.30pm.

This will mean temporary road closures in the city centre during those times.

With paraders gathering to start the proceedings, Jubilee Street and New Road will be closed between 4pm and 7pm.

Church Street, between Marlborough Place and Gardner Street, will be closed between 5pm and 7pm,

North Street be closed from 6.15pm until 7pm.

Then Middle Street, Duke Street, Ship Street, Prince Albert Street, Bartholomews, East Street and Brills Lane will be closed between 6.30pm and 7.15pm

Grand Junction Road on the seafront will be shut for 15 minutes  6.45 and 7.15pm as paraders cross to get to the beach.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place.
