Catalytic Converter Thefts Continue: Sussex Police Issue Warning

Continuing thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles parked in Sussex are being investigated by Sussex Police.

According to officers, recent incidents included the valuable devices being taken from a car in Haywards Heath, and from a vehicle in a car-park at the South of England Showground in Ardingly.

Between Monday June 21 and Wednesday June 23, a Honda Jazz parked outside its owner's home near Perrymount Road in Haywards Heath had its convertor stolen.

Then thieves made off with the device that was attached to a Lexus parked in the North Car Park at the South of England Showground on Sunday 27 June.

Catalytic converters can be particularly valuable to thieves who illegally dispose of the rare and extremely valuable metals they contain.

These rare elements from the platinum group of metals include the famously costly palladium and rhodium, along with platinum itself.

Police have handed out the following advice to all motorists using vehicles with catalytic converters.

  • Protect your car by asking your dealer if they can give you any advice on locks or guards that are approved by the vehicle manufacturer and tested to "Sold Secure Gold".
  • Mark your catalytic converter with a forensic marker and register your converter to make it harder for thieves to dispose of.
  • Park your car somewhere well-lit and overlooked, among as many cars as possible.
  • Try to park so the converter can't be easily reached - close to a wall or fence.
  • Try not to park at the end of the row if there are free spaces.

Officers said their information gathering campaign, around catalytic converter thefts, was continuing.
