Sussex Police has been named near the top of the forces in England and Wales who are likely to hand out fines for disobeying lockdown rules.

The figures, released today (October 12) cover six months ending on September the 21st.

About one in every two-thousand of Sussex's population was fined, making a total of 868 people.

It means that, for delivering fines to rule-breakers, the force is 9th out of 42.

National figures showed a wide variety in the chance of receiving a penalty, with police in one British force area being 87 times more likely to hand out Covid-19 fines than officers from an area with the lowest enforcement rate.

A study's revealed Dyfed Powys Police issued the highest number of penalties in England and Wales, followed by Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

The three forces at the bottom of the table were Staffordshire, Kent and Warwickshire.

In our immediate areas, the figures were:

  • 868 fines handed out by Sussex Police, being a rate of 0.51 per 1,000 of the population;
  • 512 fines given by Surrey Police, meaning their rate per 1,000 of the population was 0.43; and
  • our neighbours in Kent had the lowest figures, with 126 fines and a rate per 1,000 population of 0.07.
