Charity Launches 'Winter Warmer Appeal' To Raise Funds For Needy Brighton Families

East Brighton charity, Gladrags is hoping to raise funds to extend their free collaborative family sessions, providing a safe space for families and a nutritious meal.

Community groups have joined the charity to provide nourishing food and refreshment, with the charity offering free costume dress-up and craft sessions to children and families.

Gladrags says that the activities provided have proven to create 'happy shared experiences' for children and carers and 'breathing space' from sometimes 'very difficult life situations'.

It gives, they say, families in the most disadvantaged areas the opportunity to be interactive, connected, and creative. As well as making friends, it's a place where they can share information on support schemes and local services.

According to the charity, some families in Bevendean 'might not class themselves as struggling because they are just about coping. But they are actually living below the poverty line and might be a family of five, living in a two-bed flat, or busy caring for a partner or children with health issues'.

The need for family sessions has increased this year, with even more families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. The number of partners Gladrags works with has tripled.

In order to expand the reach to more children and families over Christmas and into 2024, Gladrags needs to reach their target of £2500.

Chris Llewellyn from The Bevy Pub, said:

“We are closely involved with many children from families with a whole variety of challenges.  Gladrags help us reach people in very different ways that we wouldn't be able to do without their creativity, enthusiasm and expert skills. Working together, we can really break down barriers and spread joy!"

Gladrags says:

One in three children in East Brighton live in poverty, which is where most of our collaborative family sessions take place. That’s why every donation you make plays a vital role in bridging the food and wellbeing gap. Christmas is a time of year when we can reflect on how, together, we can help communities.
