Coastguards: New Sussex Coastal Cliff Edge Danger

What you can see, above, is all the support that's left for a stretch of coastal pathway in East Sussex after a chalk cliff crumbled.

As a result, coastguards in East Sussex have this week renewed pleas to avoid walking close to cliff tops along the shoreline.

The team at Birling Gap is currently concerned about a section of chalk that's fallen away near the Belle Tout lighthouse.

It's left only a thin strip of chalk supporting the coastal soil above it.

Staff said:

"This photo was taken by one of the team at a popular spot for people to stand on the edge for a view or a photo.

"Our message is: please don't."

They point out it could collapse at any moment.
