Shoreham's volunteer lifeboat crew led a seemingly lost sailing boat into Brighton Marina last night (May 12) — and into the hands of coastguards who had some "strong words of advice" for those on board.
H.M. Coastguard staff at Shoreham said they received a call-out at 9.38pm, to a report of a sailing vessel in trouble off the coast near the Church of the Good Shepherd at Shoreham Beach.
The location is a little west of the mouth of the River Adur.
Officers said they discovered, on their arrival, that the boat required assistance as it nearly beached and narrowly missed sea groynes on several occasions.
Coastguards requested launch of Shoreham All-Weather Lifeboat and the Inshore Lifeboat to ensure that the sailing boat remained safe.
That was because the sailing boat, for reasons which were not given, could not locate the entrance to Brighton marina.
At this point, the RNLI volunteer crew boarded the vessel, and assisted the boat back to Brighton Marina.
At the Marine, Coastguard officers were waiting for them.
After arrival, coastguards gave what they have today described as "strong words of safety advice",
A casualty was assessed and the sailing boat checked for damage, before the team stood down at 1.30am today, May 13.
