A controlled explosion was carried out on Medmerry Beach in Selsey yesterday (Tuesday 23).
The Coastguard were contacted shortly before 2pm after photos were taken of an item on the beach and sent to the E.O.D. (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team).
The beach was closed to the public while teams carried out a search and found more ordnance.
The E.O.D. arrived and investigated the items; the original piece of ordnance turned out to be the top of an old WW2 Sea Mine.
It wasn't complete and was safely removed from the beach.
A controlled explosion was safely carried out for the other items found, at around 5.30pm.
The Coastguard has warned that ordnance comes in all different shapes and sizes.
Ordnance found on Medmerry beach in the past has been found to still be highly explosive, so the public are urged to refrain from touching anything found and to call the Coastguard straight away.
Teams returned to the station by 6.30pm.
A spokesperson said:
"The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not.
"Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble. Please help us and our families to stay safe. Be aware of the risks, and keep your distance."
