King Charles III’s Coronation will be shown on a big screen in Jubilee Square on Saturday, May 6.

The council has been awarded funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to host the event. The screen will also be used to show the Eurovision Song Contest a week later, in collaboration with The Great Escape (TGE), the city’s annual new music festival.

Brighton & Hove is among a number of towns and cities across the UK to have secured funding for a big screen.

The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey in London, where they will be crowned in the same place as Her Late Majesty The Queen 70 years ago.

The big screen will be set-up with a covered area to ensure the space can be used whatever the weather. There will also be some food and drink stalls onsite as well as space for people to bring their own picnics.

After the coronation, the site will become an outdoor music venue with big-screen capacity for the annual city-wide Children’s Parade on Sunday, May 7.

Jubilee Street will be closed to allow for the additional footfall the events will attract, on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May.

Jubilee Square is in the heart of the city on one of the main thoroughfares, connecting the popular North Laine shopping area to the Pavilion Gardens. The square is regularly used for a diverse range of cultural activities including art showcases, installations, street theatre, exhibitions and community events.

The square can accommodate around 500 people, with additional capacity on Jubilee Street.

The council’s Executive Director, Economy Environment & Culture, Donna Chisholm, says:

“May is a busy month for the city with the Brighton Festival, Fringe and The Great Escape all taking place as well as the coronation.

“Brighton & Hove is renowned for its community spirit, and we’re delighted to have won funding for a big screen.

“The event in Jubilee Square means there is dedicated space in the heart of the city for people to come together and mark the historic occasion.”
