Coronavirus: Littlehampton Woman Jailed After Threatening To Infect Police

A Littlehampton woman has been jailed for six months after threatening to infect police officers with Covid-19.

Police said Lisa Scopes, of West Way, Wick, attacked two police officers, coughed in their faces and said she wanted to infect them with Covid-19.

The 36-year-old was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on August 19, after admitting to using threatening behaviour and assaulting the two PCs who were called to her address in March.

The officers were responding to reports of a violent dispute when Scopes, who had clearly been drinking, was abusive and threatening, and coughed repeatedly at one of them.

She was detained.

While travelling to police custody she reportedly coughed in the faces of both officers, and blew air out of her nose; saying she hoped they would get the virus.

It transpired that Scopes had been self-isolating and told the arresting officers that she had a temperature, although it was not subsequently confirmed that she had a virus.

The two men later tested negative for a virus.

CI Jon Carter said:

"Whatever the circumstances, being assaulted is not part of our officers' jobs and will not be tolerated.

"In this case the officers were simply trying to help her in a volatile situation and also to ensure that several children were kept safe.

"Scopes' actions in threatening the officers and attempting to infect them were despicable and it is good to note that the court has clearly reflected that view."
