Coronavirus: Rapid response in place for homeless people in Brighton and Hove

A rapid response is already in place to help homeless people in the event of the spread of coronavirus. Brighton and Hove City Council Housing Committee chair Gill Williams said that the council was ready to keep essential services going and had dealt with the problem rapidly this week. She was responding to a question from campaigner John Hadman when the committee met at Hove Town Hall yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 11). He asked what the council was doing to make sure Covid-19 did not interrupt the emergency night shelter known as the SWEP (severe weather emergency protocol). Councillor Williams said that the council was working with colleagues and partners to make sure that they could keep services going. She said: “We will ensure the council can deliver essential services to the homeless and rough sleepers. “This week, we dealt with such an issue rapidly. “If we have this situation, we can isolate people if necessary.” There are currently two active cases of Covid-19 in Brighton and Hove. Five people are known to have fully recovered. On Tuesday (March, 11) there were 432 active cases of the virus nationally, with 18 people having recovered and six having died.
