Coronavirus: The latest developments in Sussex (Monday, 11)

Here’s all the coronavirus related news that’s gone on in Sussex over the weekend. As of Monday (May, 11) at 6am, the following figures are the known number of Covid-19 cases in each district: Brighton and Hove: 399 East Sussex: 648 West Sussex: 1,228 Total: 2,275 Drugs and crime in Brighton and Hove Councillors on the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee met with Chief Superintendent Nick May from Sussex Police last Thursday (May, 7), to discuss a number of issues such as the City Council's strategy for community safety and crime for 2020-2023. It's after a change in crime patterns as a result of the coronavirus lockdown. There have been less burglaries and violence associated with nightlife, with an overall drop in crime reports. However, it's expected that there will be a rise in domestic abuse once restrictions are lifted. Concerns were also raised over open drug use and dealing in St James' Street and the Queens Park area in Brighton. Councillors claimed residents were sending in letters complaining that police were too busy patrolling beaches. May said the individuals could be more obvious because the streets are quieter, and officers are encouraged to visit the areas before reaching the seafront. Residents are asked to only bring waste or recycling that is not suitable for kerbside collections, and check opening times for local sites. Only cars will be allowed, no vans or trailers.

Household Waste Recycling Sites will begin reopening from today for green waste and black bag waste only.

Eastbourne Borough Council's leader, David Tutt, said that he had to accept that bringing hundreds of thousands of people together at this time was out of the question. Gyndebourne Sussex's world-famous opera house extended it's shutdown to include it's entire summer festival. Over 400 performers and staff are expected to lose work from the cancellation of Glyndebourne's performances.

Patina, a local group of artists, parents and teachers, said the pictures are aimed at supporting children in Lewes' twin towns during lockdown. Members called the messages to Germany and France "awesome".
