Coronavirus: The latest developments in Sussex (Thursday, May 28)

Here's the latest coronavirus news for Sussex for Thursday, May 28.

As of Thursday (May, 28) at 9am, the following figures are the known number of Covid-19 cases in each district:

Brighton and Hove: 429

East Sussex: 700

West Sussex: 1,317

Total: 2,446

 

Two Sussex MPs unite across party lines to oppose proposed changes to East Sussex Fire and Rescue

The consultation process, which began on April 24, drew criticism from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) which accused ESFRS of attempting to “sneak through cuts while the public focuses on the pandemic" - but this was disputed by the fire service.

Lewes's Conservative MP Maria Caulfield, and Brighton Kemptown Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle both say they're "particularly concerned" about any cuts.

In a joint letter, signed by both, they said:

"After discussions with the Chief Fire Officer, local firefighters and residents, we have concluded that it is not the right time to proceed with such a major restructure of the local service.

"We are not satisfied with the urgency of this review, and believe that, while firefighters have taken on the extra duties during the Covid crisis that it is unfair to them, as key workers, to be having these structure changes forced on them."

Brighton and Hove economic recovery committee meets

Saving the hospitality industry and encouraging active travel are among the challenges facing councillors charged with economic recovery in Brighton and Hove.

The five councillors charged with overseeing how the council comes out of the covid-19 crisis are due to hold their first virtual meeting together on Friday (29 May).

Since the lockdown began in March, it has had a significant impact on “large swathes” of the local economy, according to a report going before councillors.
