Coronavirus: The latest developments in Sussex (Wednesday, April 29)

Here’s all the coronavirus related news that’s gone on in Sussex over the last 24 hours. As of Wednesday (April, 29) at 6am, the following figures are the known number of Covid-19 cases in each district: Brighton and Hove: 346 East Sussex: 524 West Sussex: 1,061 Total: 1,931 Virtual council meetings Following a change in the law Brighton and Hove City Council said they are now having meetings as normal, albeit virtually. Authorities across the county cancelled all but urgent meetings at the beginning of lockdown, this change means they can start making vital decisions again over video conferencing. Abandoned bikes Southern Rail are donating abandoned bikes to key workers. The train operator said they are working with an organisation of mechanics called 'Handlebars' in London, who are working to recycle bikes for NHS and essential workers. Southern said they get around 20 cycles left at stations a month, and they now have nearly 300 stored at their Horsham maintenance depot. Homes for Heroes A not-for-profit housing developer has started crowdfunding to help build 'Homes for Heros'. Little Ships is piloting a new programme where they use underused publicly owned land to build affordable housing for key workers and people in housing crisis. Brighton and Hove is one of the first places they are trying out, but they plan to build at least 750,000 homes, and are urging others to follow suit. Cemeteries to reopen Updated government guidance means cemetery grounds at crematoria may reopen. Woodvale cemetery in Brighton is reopening today (Wednesday, 29). Lead councillor for life events services, Daniel Yates, said he's pleased but has urged people to treat the grounds with respect. Previously there were concerns after staff witnessed people using the grounds for activities such as skateboarding and picnics. Children were also seen climbing on headstones.

Following updated government advice, we will be reopening the grounds at Woodvale cemetery tomorrow, Wednesday 29 April. Please treat the grounds with respect. Read more ➡️ https://t.co/gxpcHbQoAo pic.twitter.com/rjfIjm6wMy
