Coronavirus: Woman convicted of spitting in faces of frontline workers in Eastbourne

An East Sussex woman has been convicted of spitting in the faces of emergency workers after being taken to hospital on Monday (May, 11). Sarah Clarkson-Rose, from near Uckfield, admitted assaulting two police officers and an A&E nurse at Eastbourne DGH. Police said the 42-year-old, of New Barn Lane, Ridgewood, was taken into a police cell after assaulting the first officer during an arrest on May 11. After claiming to feel unwell overnight, officers took her to Eastbourne District General Hospital. Clarkson-Rose then repeatedly spat in the faces of both a nurse and another officer who was escorting her, according to police. It turned out that the woman needed no medical treatment and she was returned to police custody. All three emergency workers will be tested for coronavirus, and have so far shown no symptoms. Clarkson-Rose pleaded guilty during a virtual hearing in custody at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (May, 13). Officers said the 42-year-old will remain in custody until sentencing on June 10. Deputy Chief Constable Jo Shiner said: "This was an appalling series of deliberate attacks on three public servants doing their duty to help keep the public safe. "We are glad that the court took these offences seriously, because of the flagrant disregard with which this woman treated three workers on the front line in protecting the community at this crucial time."
