Council Asks Travellers To Move From Hove Lawns To Official Site

Travellers who parked their caravans on Hove Lawns this week have been requested to move to an official site by Brighton & Hove City Council.

In a statement, the council said as soon as they were aware of the encampment, they contacted police in order to make a joint visit to the occupants.

"After making welfare checks, a notice was issued asking the group to leave by 6pm."

They were directed to an official travellers site which, "offers good facilities and access to health care if it is needed".

The council added that, by Thursday afternoon, the travellers were in the process of leaving Hove.

The illegal encampment comes after several instances of travellers setting up in parks and public open spaces across Sussex.

In the past two weeks, camps have been moved on from sites in Goring, Brighton's Preston Park and Chichester.
