Council Warns Of Avian Flu As Dead Birds Found At Worthing Park

Worthing Borough Council says it's investigating potential cases of avian influenza after dead birds were found at Brooklands Park, just days after dead fish were seen floating in the lake.

They've warned people on social media not to touch any birds found that are either dead or look unwell while they investigate the cause of death.

They've also stated that they've notified the Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in case it involves avian influenza.

They're asking the public to report dead or visibly sick birds to Defra as soon as possible as the council is working with them on the clean-up.

Defra Hotline: 03459 335577.

Brooklands Park has been blighted by wildlife deaths over the past week, after as many as 50 fish were spotted floating in the lake.

The cause was a possible lack of oxygen in the water due to the recent heatwave.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue were called in to help. They used pumps to recycle the water, sucking it in and pumping it back out to aerate it.
