Several West Sussex councils plan to band together to keep vehicle fleets – which provide services such as refuse collection – rolling.
A collaboration between Adur and Worthing Councils, Horsham District Council, Chichester District Council, Crawley Borough Council and Surrey based Reigate & Banstead Borough Council would see a joint contract for providing and fitting tyres for council vehicles.
It is hoped that teaming up could give the local authorities group buying power, resulting in savings.
There are 137 vehicles in Adur and Worthing Councils’ fleet alone with some working ‘5 am to 10 pm, seven days a week’. This means a new tyre contract is essential to keep services running smoothly.
Over the last year, Adur and Worthing Councils spent more than £43,000 on tyres.
Both the Worthing executive member for digital and environmental services and the Adur executive member for the environment approved of the plans.
The alternative, say council officers, is to not take part in a joint contract which could see costs increase.
