Covid-19: The New Rules - A Simple Guide

Are you confused by all the new rules? Here's a simple guide to remind you what you can and can't do under the Government's latest Plan B, at home or if going abroad.

With reports saying Omicron cases are doubling every two to three days, the government has introduced new guidelines and legislation for people in England, which come into force on Friday:

  • Work from home if you can (from December 13)
  • Wear a face mask in public indoor venues (like cinemas, theatres) and while walking around the pub, but not while sitting and eating/drining.
  • Nightclubs - you'll need to show your NHS Covid Pass in order to gain entry, this is for: Unseated indoor venues with more than 500 people, unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people, and any venue with more than 10,000 people. People can also show proof of a negative result from a recent lateral flow test.
  • Masks are required in shops, banks, post offices, hairdressers and on public transport (a legal requirement since Nov 30)
  • If you're identified as having come into close contact with a coronavirus case you will need to: test daily, isolate if you're positive.

How do you get a Covid passport?

If you're over 18 and registered with a GP and one of the following:

  • It's been two weeks since your second vaccination
  • In the past 48 hours you've had a negative PCR or lateral flow test and you've reported it on the NHS website (https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result) - the pass lasts for 48 hours after the result.
  • You've had a positive PCR test result in the past six months and finished self-isolating (this pass lasts for 180 days)

TRAVEL:

  • Coming into the UK all people aged 12 and over must show proof of a negative covid test before they travel - the test can be PCR or lateral flow, but it must be from a private company, not a free test provided by the NHS.
  • If you test positive, you should follow the rules of that country and not fly to the UK.
  • Once you arrive in the UK, everyone aged 5 and above must take a PCR test within two days of arriving.
  • This should be booked before you travel with a government-approved provider.
  • You must self-isolate while waiting for the result, regardless of whether you're vaccinated
  • Within 48 hours of your arrival in the UK , you must fill in an online passenger locator form, even if you are just passing through the UK.
  • You only need to quarantine of you are travelling from a country on the Red List.

    Rates are:

  • 10 days (11-nights) for one adult - £2,285
  • Additional adult (or child over 11) - £1,430
  • Children aged five to 11 - £325

If you are unvaccinated:

  • Take a PCR or antigen test (not a free NHS test) within two days of travelling to the UK.
  • Take a test on or before day two and on or after day after your return.
  • Self-isolate for 10 days once you arrive back.
  • Unvaccinated travellers will also have the option of 'test to release' if they want to shorten their quarantine.
