The South of England Show at Ardingly in June, one of our region's most prestigious and well-attended agriculturally-themed events, can't hold competitive livestock classes this year.

The Board of Trustees of the South of England Agricultural Society this week confirmed the show's dates (11th, 12th & 13th June 2021) but added:

"After careful consideration and debate ... with a heavy heart we have decided that, due to uncertainty in the guidance on competing under Covid restrictions, and with the welfare of all as the utmost priority, livestock competition will not be able to take place at the show in 2021."

They continued:

"We do understand the disappointment that this will cause for those who compete at the South of England Show and we would like to reassure everyone that we plan to return to holding both livestock and equestrian showing classes in 2022.

"We will be in touch directly with everyone involved in the livestock competitions at the South of England Show."

The society said livestock will still be an important part of the show, featuring in displays and demonstrations, where Covid restrictions can be safely applied, across the three days for visitors to enjoy.

The pattern of days this year will be different — the show will run for the first time from Friday to Sunday.

Organisers promised it will "offer the chance for every generation to re-connect with their countryside and have a great day out".

According to the society, sections of the show are expected to include:

  • showjumping,
  • live entertainment,
  • rural and traditional crafts, and
  • an 'abundance' of food, drink and shopping opportunities.

Tickets to the show and more details on the programme are expected to be available soon.
