Crawley Fire: Tip Closed For "At Least A Week"

West Sussex County Council: A household waste recycling site

The Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) in Metcalf Way, Crawley, will be closed for at least a week following a fire on Friday 17 July.

That's according to West Sussex County Council, who've told More Radio that the closure is needed while structural engineers inspect the extent of the damage to the building.

It also gives time to let burnt and dampened waste be removed.

People who were planning to visit the site this week are being advised to instead safely store their waste, or to go to an alternative West Sussex site.

The HWRS at Horsham will temporarily be open on Wednesday to help local residents to dispose of their recycling and waste, but unfortunately will not be able to accept vehicles with trailers.

County Hall pleaded with residents to store their waste wherever possible, and to make full use of kerbside collections, rather than making longer journeys to dispose of their waste.

Trailers with a permit are currently only accepted at Worthing and Billingshust HWRSs.

A web link covering permits was made available: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/land-waste-and-housing/waste-and-recycling/van-pickup-and-trailer-waste-permit/

Discussion possible causes of the flames, the County Council said experience showed they could have been started by items such as hot coals, gas canisters, and batteries, including lithium ion batteries (commonly found in a variety of products such as eCigarettes, mobile phones, toys, cameras and laptop computers).

West Sussex County Council asked residents to dispose of these items responsibly.

For example batteries, can be placed in the designated battery disposal facilities at recycling centres.

A further update will be provided later this week, the local authority said.
