Crawley Firefighters Campaign To Reduce The Number Of Drink Drivers This Christmas

Crews from Crawley Fire Station are going to be offering advice to residents at their upcoming road safety events which encourage people to celebrate Christmas safely.

In the two years from 2018 to 2020, a total of 290 people in Sussex were killed or seriously injured due to drink or drug driving. As a result, Crawley firefighters are campaigning to reduce the number of road traffic collisions caused by intoxicated drivers.

The free events will be held on December 10 and December 14 outside County Mall, running from 10am until 2pm. The local community are invited along to learn more about the consequences of driving under the influence.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service's Information Bus and Community Volunteers will also be there throughout the day, supporting the crews to ensure that residents will have access to a variety of information.

Jim McGrath, Station Manager at Crawley Fire Station, said:

“With festive celebrations being cancelled last year, we’re aware people may want to go out this Christmas and make up for lost time.

“Road traffic collisions are one of the most traumatic incidents we attend, and unfortunately we usually see an increase during the festive season. Attending these collisions at a time associated with loved ones and happiness is particularly upsetting.

“We’re looking forward to meeting the local community at County Mall, busting the many myths regarding drink driving and hopefully preventing a serious collision in doing so.”
