Crawley Girl, 9, Donates Hair To Cancer Charity and Raises Over £1k

A nine-year-old girl from Crawley, who said she just wants to "make someone smile again" is having her hair cut and donated to charity today (June 7).

Evie, 9, came up with the idea after she had complained to her grandparents that her hair was getting too long and she needed it cut.

Her dad, Michael, recalls the conversation during which Evie was told that "someone recovering from cancer would love to have hair like yours".

After that, six-year-old Evie started growing it and researching how she could donate it with her mum.

They discovered The Little Princess Trust, which makes real-hair wigs for children recovering from cancer treatment.

They said:

"When a child loses their hair to cancer or another condition, we'll be there with a free, real hair wig to help restore their confidence and identity. We won't stop until the research that we fund ends childhood cancer forever. Promise.

"Please visit us at www.littleprincesses.org.uk to find out how you can help us give young people back what cancer takes away. The Trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic community fundraisers. We receive no formal funding. Please help to raise money for us so that we can help more families."

On learning that it costs £550 for each wig, Evie decided she wouldn't just donate her hair, she would also raise as much as she could to help make more wigs.

Unable to cut her hair during lockdown, it continued to grow and she'll now be able to donate at least 12 inches of hair to make a wig.

Today, the final day of her campaign, Evie has raised £1,115 on her JustGiving page and will be going for the chop after school at 4pm today, three years after deciding to grow it for charity.

"I feel that my hair could bring joy, happiness and smiles to someone else," she said.

UPDATE: Evie has had the chop and donated 13 inches of hair! Here's her new look:
