A broad investigation is continuing after two incidents of cruelty to swans in a park in West Sussex, that resulted in one being killed and another injured.

According to Horsham District Council, the first casualty was a cygnet killed, on or before July 30, with what a vet believed was a shot to the side of the animal's head.

An examination led to the conclusion a projectile similar to a ball-bearing was used by the killer, possibly from a rifle or catapult.

The second cygnet was discovered later, the council said, and had suffered a similar wound.

Because the animal was still alive, a swan rescue team was able to take the bird into its care.

The team has now rehydrated and stabilised the cygnet's health, though it will remain at the rescue centre for the time being.

A spokesperson for the local authority said:

"These incidents have now been reported to Sussex Police.

"The Council asks that visitors to the park remain vigilant and report any suspicious circumstances to the police.

"There is a cash reward available for anyone who can provide information that leads to a successful prosecution."
