Derailment At Bognor Causes Break In Service On Southern Railway

Southern Railway has announced that no trains will serve Bognor Regis station today (Thursday), due to an earlier incident.

The rail operator said that a train derailed in the platform area at a low speed and as such work will need to be undertaken to clear the track, preventing service.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Passengers are being urged to check before they travel and leave extra time to complete their journey this morning.

Rail replacement buses are running between Bognor Regis and Barnham, with those travelling from Bognor Regis able to take a bus to Barnham, and those travelling to Bognor Regis being able to take a train to Barnham and catch a replacement bus from there.

A shuttle bus has been requested to run between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

A spokesperson said:

"This incident has meant that we cannot get all of our trains out of Bognor Regis station to run all of our services to full capacity.

"Please be aware that this may impact on social distancing, as some of our trains will be cancelled, and some will run with less coaches than normal, meaning more people will be aboard each train."

Network Rail and Rail Accident Investigation Board staff are on-site and investigations into the incident have started.

The early news is that two sets of points have been damaged, so as well as the derailed train having to be lifted back onto the track, these will have to be repaired before we are allowed to run over the area. We can confirm that no passengers or crew were injured in this accident.
