A former rubbish tip in Wadhurst could soon be sold off to a commercial property developer, if given the go ahead by a senior county councillor next week.
On Tuesday (June 8), East Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for resources Nick Bennett is expected to sign off on proposals to sell the former Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Fairclough Lane.
The council first put up the site for sale in October last year and even got as far as identifying a preferred buyer. However, this potential sale collapsed due to financial uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
In a report a council officer said:
“The council decided in January 2021 that re-marketing of the property was the preferred route.
“The property was subsequently re-offered to the market in Spring 2021 and a preferred purchaser has now been selected for the lead member to consider.
“The offers received in Spring 2021 were at higher values than the original marketing exercise in mid-2020.”
According to meeting papers, the council received several offers for the site, with the highest bidder offering £455,500.
Council papers say the bid came from a private investor who intends to build industrial units for commercial rent.
An offer of £50,000 was also put forward by Wadhurst Parish Council, but it is not recommended by officers
