Sussex Police have are warning disruption is expected throughout Brighton and Hove ahead of climate strikes and the Labour Party conference. A global climate strike will take place tomorrow (Friday, 20), starting at Hove Lawns around 10am and moving off from 11am. It will then move through the city on a route via the Brunswick Road, Western Road, North Street and the Steine to The Level. Superintendent Chris Veale, who is leading the police operation for the event, said: "We are engaged with the protest organiser and will work with them to facilitate a safe and peaceful protest, while endeavouring to keep disruption to the city to a minimum." Brighton and Hove city council have backed the strike, and said children should be allowed to attend as long as they have the support of their school and their parent/carer's permission. In a statement, the authority also said council staff wishing to take part would be expected to take the time off as annual leave. Council leader Nancy Platts said: "Climate change is a global crisis. "In Brighton and Hove we recently declared a climate emergency and a commitment to go carbon neutral by 2030. "We’re encouraging everyone who wants to protest about this crucial issue to have their voices heard." However, police are warning of major disruption through the city with the arrival of the annual Labour Party conference. The force has been preparing Operation Otter for the five day event, and confirmed there will be armed officers deployed as well as other safety measures. There will also be plain clothed officers and barriers in some parts of the city. Superintendent Jane Derrick said: "As always, we ask that people demonstrate a certain level of personal responsibility including things like taking care of belongings, following personal safety advice and flagging any issues or suspicious behaviour to event staff or police. "Passes and a search will be a condition of entry to the Brighton Centre and people elsewhere may be stopped as part of the overall policing response with several hundred fringe events planned in the city." Police said there are no planned road closures other than the small crescent in front of the Grand Hotel.
