A diver, who'd been underwater off the Sussex coast near Selsey, has been flown to hospital with suspected decompression sickness.

That's according to H.M. Coastguards from the town, who reported that a patient thought to have the bends was rescued by helicopter from a dive boat on Sunday.

A crew with Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 175 made the transfer to an ambulance at the landing site at St. Richard's Hospital in Chichester, before the patient was taken into the hospital itself.

Selsey Coastguards said, after the afternoon rescue:

"The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not.

"Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

"Please help us and our families stay safe.

"Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.

"In an emergency out at sea, on the beach, or if you get stuck in mud along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
