Police in Sussex have confirmed to More Radio that there's been a significant increase in thefts of dogs from locations in the county.

After Chief Constable Jo Shiner described called the taking of dogs a "hot topic" during a press conference, the force has promised it will investigate any reports.

The statement came days after police raided a suspected illegal puppy farm in St. Michael's Way in Brighton on November 13.

Chief Inspector Steve Biglands said:

"We are very aware of the recent spate of reported dog thefts in Sussex, and we understand the upset and distress this causes to the dog owners.

"Our officers, including those in our recently-launched Rural Crime Team, have been responding to the reports we have already received and will continue to do so going forward.

"If someone suspects their dog has been stolen, or if they have any information about people or vehicles suspected of being involved in dog thefts, we urge them to report it to us as we will investigate."

Members of the public can report information to Sussex Police online or by calling 101.

Alternatively, the independent charity Crimestoppers will take reports anonymously on 0800 555 111.
