A charity has warned Alabama Rot, a potentially fatal disease affecting dogs, has been discovered in Southwater. The Stop Alabama Rot Charity has confirmed a case of Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (otherwise known as CRGV or Alabama Rot) was recently found. Since 2012, 192 cases have been confirmed by the charity, with 17 of these in 2019 to date. Two cases were also confirmed in October in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Charities said that owners should look out for symptoms such as skin lesions, skin appearing swollen, red, or as ulcers. When the disease affects the kidneys, 85 per cent of cases are proved fatal. In September, the charity posted this message on their website: "We are in the time of year when historically we have identified more cases of CRGV and although this disease remains rare, we continue to advise owners to be vigilant and to seek advice from their local vet if their dog develops unexplained skin lesions/sores. "Although an environmental trigger for this disease is possible, this has not been proven."
