A week of police work to tackle illegal drug supply in the Langney district of Eastbourne has brought arrests, visits to property where unlawful activity was suspected, and tip-offs from the public.

That's according to Sussex Police, which says the service has completed seven days of targeted activity alongside other public bodies in its "Operation Delivery".

Officers said, between August 11 and 16, they used powers to stop and search 25 times, and made several arrests for offences including three for possession with intent to supply drugs, drug driving, obstructing a police officer and theft.

Twenty reports of information were made by members of the public as a result of a public meeting explaining the police's work in the district.

A spokesperson added:

"Intelligence and public reporting is key and helps officers identify and tackle county lines, where organised criminal groups use phone lines to move and supply drugs, usually from cities into smaller towns and rural areas.

"They often exploit vulnerable people, including children and those with mental health or addiction issues, by recruiting them to distribute the drugs, known as drug running.

"They may also deal from the homes of vulnerable people, a practice known as cuckooing."

Working alongside housing officers from Eastbourne Borough Council, police said four arrests followed visits to check on possible cuckooing at 15 separate addresses.

After these visits, police said six safeguarding or community support referrals were made.

Officers gave several signs to look out for that may indicate someone is a victim of cuckooing:

  • frequent visitors at unsociable hours
  • changes in your neighbour’s daily routine
  • unusual smells coming from a property
  • suspicious or unfamiliar vehicles outside an address

Additionally, PC Peter Clarke hosted a community meeting at Langney Community Centre, attended by 43 residents.
