East Sussex Firefighters: False Alarms, More Than Two-Thirds Of Callouts

Firefighters in part of Sussex have revealed that — on a single night this week — more than two-thirds of all call-outs were to false alarms.

That's according to staff with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, after they totalled-up their work on Wednesday night (August 19).

Officials are pleading with premises managers to take more care over how automatic alarms are managed.

They've issued a set of guidelines to help reduce false alarms. They include:

  • Avoid setting-off hard-wired alarms in areas where cooking frequently happens;
  • Allow smoking only in designated areas, where alarms aren't in use;
  • Don't use aerosol sprays near smoke detectors;
  • During dusty work, fit a cover to a smoke alarm — but take it off straight after the work is finished.
